How a KitchenAid serial number works
Since Whirlpool took over KitchenAid in 1986, stand mixers carry a 9 character serial that hides the build date in the middle. Take WH0301234:

Where it was built. W is Greenville, Ohio.

Year code
One character for the year. It repeats every 30 years.

Week of the year, 00 to 52. Week 1 starts on the first Monday of January.

Unit number
A running count of mixers built. It has nothing to do with the date.
So WH0301234 was built in week 3 of 1998: H is the year code for 1998, and 03 is the week.

KitchenAid serial number year chart
The year code cycles through digits and letters, then starts again 30 years later. That is why a mixer can show two possible years. The decoder drops any year that has not happened yet, and shows both when both are possible.

Older mixers: the 5 digit code
Vintage Hobart-era mixers, the heavy all-metal ones from before Whirlpool, carry a 5 digit date code instead. The first three digits are the day of the year and the last two are the year. So 31883 is the 318th day of 1983, which is November 14, 1983.
The rules for modern serials come from the KitchenAid Stand Mixer Service Manual. The vintage 5 digit code is collector knowledge that KitchenAid never published, so its exact day is approximate. Serial number questions
Where is the serial number on a KitchenAid stand mixer?
On the identification label on the bottom of the base. Unplug the mixer and turn it over. The label carries the model number and the serial number. If the label is worn or missing, send us a photo and we will tell you what we can from the mixer itself.
How do I read a KitchenAid serial number?
Modern serials are 9 characters, like WH0301234. The first letter is the plant (W is Greenville, Ohio). The second character is the year code. The next two digits are the week of the year, and the last five digits are a serial number that has nothing to do with the date. So WH0301234 was built in week 3 of 1998.
Why does my serial number show two possible years?
KitchenAid reuses each year code every 30 years, so an X could mean 1990 or 2020, and a 6 could mean 1986 or 2016. The decoder removes any year that is in the future, but when both years are possible it shows both. Your receipt, the date you got the mixer, or the model number on the same label will tell you which one is right, and we are happy to look at a photo of the label if you are still unsure.
My serial number is only 5 digits. How old is my mixer?
A 5 digit code is the older Hobart-era date code found on vintage mixers. The first three digits are the day of the year and the last two are the year, so 31883 is the 318th day of 1983, which is November 14. Does the serial number tell me which model I have?
